The large-scale government intervention in the economy is going to end badly.

Any number of pundits claim that we have now passed the worst of the recession. Green shoots of recovery are supposedly popping up all around the country, and the economy is expected to resume growing soon at an annual rate of 3% to 4%. Many of these are the same people who insisted that the economy would continue growing last year, even while it was clear that we were already in the beginning stages of a recession.

A false recovery is under way. I am reminded of the outlook in 1930, when the experts were certain that the worst of the Depression was over and that recovery was just around the corner. The economy and stock market seemed to be recovering, and there was optimism that the recession, like many of those before it, would be over in a year or less. Instead, the interventionist policies of Hoover and Roosevelt caused the Depression to worsen, and the Dow Jones industrial average did not recover to 1929 levels until 1954. I fear that our stimulus and bailout programs have already done too much to prevent the economy from recovering in a natural manner and will result in yet another asset bubble. An economics professor at Texas Tech said he had never failed a single student  before but had once failed an entire class. That class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich–a great equalizer. The professor then said ok, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism.

All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A. After the first test the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. But, as the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too; so they studied little.. The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around the average was an F.

The scores never increased as bickering, blame, and name calling all resulted in hard feelings, and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. All failed. To their great surprise, the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great; but when government takes all the reward away; no one will try or want to succeed.

Could not be any simpler than that.

Texas, Ms. Debra Medina wants to be your Governor!

Summary of this week’s report:
The race for Governor of Texas is starting to heat up, and conservatives will soon have to decide whom we’re going to support in the GOP primary.  We’ll look at the pros and cons of the major candidates in this week’s report.

Full report:
Next year’s Republican primary is fast approaching, and the gubernatorial candidates are making it clear that this is going to be no ordinary GOP primary battle.   Governor Rick Perry is up against Kay Bailey Hutchison, who has been a US Senator for sixteen years.  Primary battles between two political powerhouses don’t happen very often; obviously both camps understand just how important the office of Texas governor will be in 2012.  Besides the two big names, there’s also two other candidates in the GOP race, Debra Medina and Larry Kilgore.

Which candidate should conservative Texans get behind? Unfortunately, that’s not an easy question to answer.  Neither Perry nor Hutchinson is someone conservatives can wholeheartedly support, for various reasons I’ll discuss below. Let’s look at the pros and cons of each candidate.

One of the most important reasons for becoming a precinct chair is to serve as an election judge. If a party has a vacancy for the precinct chair and election judge in a precinct, that election judge is appointed. This has resulted in liberal precincts holding elections with NO CONSERVATIVE JUDGES OR CLERKS AT ALL! And when there is no opposing-party judge to challenge any attempts at voter fraud, the potential for fraud is greatly increased. Election integrity depends upon this balance of judges from opposing parties.

Please attend one of the following  Houston Patriotic Resistance’s (along with several other groups) presentations on becoming a precinct chair and achieving better election integrity:

What: Be a direct influence on your party and become a Precinct Chair (Harris County residents).  (Each of these training sessions is self-contained.  You would only attend ONE of them, as they are not a “series” of training sessions.)

EL PASO – Debra Medina, a GOP gubernatorial candidate running a difficult primary race against two incumbent Republicans, visits El Paso for the first time today to learn the views of business leaders and residents on topics such as property taxes and illegal immigration.

The former Wharton County Republican Party chairwoman will host a town hall meeting at the West Side Regional Command Center, at 4801 Osborne.

Medina said she was eager to interact with locals to do an assessment of the border issues, interstate commerce, military and education problems troubling El Paso.

“Before I start throwing things out, I’m going to … engage with the community involved,” she said.

Born and raised in Beeville, Texas, on a farm between Corpus Christi and San Antonio, Medina is a registered nurse and business owner running a campaign promoting limited intervention by the government.

Her Republican opponents are Gov. Rick Perry, U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and Larry Kilgore of Mansfield, Texas.

Medina said that, if elected, she planned to focus on three areas — elimination of property taxes, comprehensive immigration reform and the protection of Texas sovereignty. Read the rest of this entry »

Ship your ship AND take the booty

While all the talk at present is about economic corners turned and markets charging ahead, no one is paying much notice to an American economy deteriorating before our eyes. These myopic commentators seem to be simply moving past the now almost-universally held conclusion that before the crash of 2008, our economy was on an unsustainable course. If these imbalances had been corrected, then perhaps I too would be joining in the euphoria. But evidence abounds that we have not veered at all from that dangerous path.

The primary factor that enables our government to peddle economic snake oil is the dollar’s unique role as the world’s reserve currency, and our creditors’ willingness to preserve its status.

Last week, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported that consumer spending as a percentage of U.S. GDP has risen to 71%, a post-World War II record. This level is notably higher than other wealthy industrialized countries, and vastly higher than the levels sustained by China and other emerging economies. At the same time, our industrial output is contracting, our trade deficit is expanding once again (after contracting earlier in the year), and our savings rate is plummeting (after an early year surge).

The data confirms that government stimuli are worsening the structural imbalances underlying our economy. The recent ‘rebound’ in GDP is not resulting from increased economic output, but merely from the fact that we are borrowing more than ever. That is precisely how we got ourselves into this mess. An economy cannot grow indefinitely by borrowing more than it produces. Not only is such a course untenable, but the added debt ensures a deeper recession when the bills come due.

This soon-to-be-called depression will not end until the pendulum of consumer spending habits swings violently in the other direction. This will be a jarring change, but it is the splash of cold water that we need to return our economy to viability. I believe that consumer spending as a share of GDP will need to temporarily contract to roughly 50% of GDP, before eventually moving toward its historic mean of 65%. Such a move would indicate a restoration of our personal savings, a decline in borrowing and trade deficits, and an increased industrial output. That would be a real recovery. Communications chief offers shocking confession to foreign government

TEL AVIV – President Obama’s presidential campaign focused on “making” the news media cover certain issues while rarely communicating anything to the press unless it was “controlled,” White House Communications Director Anita Dunn disclosed to the Dominican government at a videotaped conference.

“Very rarely did we communicate through the press anything that we didn’t absolutely control,” said Dunn.

“One of the reasons we did so many of the David Plouffe videos was not just for our supporters, but also because it was a way for us to get our message out without having to actually talk to reporters,” said Dunn, referring to Plouffe, who was Obama’s chief campaign manager.

“We just put that out there and made them write what Plouffe had said as opposed to Plouffe doing an interview with a reporter. So it was very much we controlled it as opposed to the press controlled it,” Dunn said.

Continued Dunn: “Whether it was a David Plouffe video or an Obama speech, a huge part of our press strategy was focused on making the media cover what Obama was actually saying as opposed to why the campaign was saying it, what the tactic was. … Making the press cover what we were saying.”

Video of Dunn’s remarks at the conference can be seen below:

Dunn was speaking at a Jan. 12, 2009, event focusing on Obama’s media tactics and hosted by the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development, which seeks to promote collaboration between the U.S. and the Dominican Republic. The event was held in Santo Domingo and was attended by the country’s president. Read the rest of this entry »

THE WASHINGTON TIMES

[Here is The Washington Times original story, links added by HALC.us staff.]

When it comes to having past views that should frighten every American citizen, Ezekiel Emanuel (see above editorial) has nothing on the president’s “chief science adviser,” John P. Holdren. The combination of Mr. Holdren with Dr. Emanuel should make the public seriously concerned with this administration’s moral compass concerning care for the old and weak.

John P Holdren, Obama's Science Czar

Earlier this month, Mr. Holdren served as co-chairman when the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology met for the first time. It’s a disgrace that Mr. Holdren is even on the council. In “Ecoscience: Population, Resources, Environment,” a book he co-authored in 1977 with noted doomsayers Paul R. and Anne H. Erlich, Mr. Holdren wrote: “Indeed, it has been concluded that compulsory population-control laws, even including laws requiring compulsory abortion, could be sustained under the existing Constitution if the population crisis became sufficiently severe to endanger the society.”
