Fellow Patriot,

Radical environmentalists and Big Government Politicians are joining forces to jam through the radical Cap and Tax scheme, with a vote possibly as soon as September.

Campaign for Liberty needs your help if we are to defeat this tax-increasing, freedom-stealing legislation.

Campaign for Liberty President John Tate and I have prepared an urgent audio update on how C4L plans to defeat this Big Government power grab.

Please take a moment to read John’s email below and then listen to this crucial message. In Liberty,

[From LewRockwell.com, by Brian Roberts, story here.]

Last week, the feds sent the Environmental Protection Agency out to harass the sovereign state of Texas. Texas needs to reclaim the spirit of Davy Crockett, when he famously proclaimed “you may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas”; and send the federal agency packing. Here’s why and how.

EPA’s Goal is Centralization of Power
By sending the EPA to Texas, the federal government’s goal is not environmental improvements. The goal is centralization of power. The tactic is to use the unelected bureaucrats of the EPA to increase Texas dependence on the federal government through arbitrary and economically crippling regulation.

Refinery permits are just tools that the EPA intends to use to control the Texas oil and gas industry. EPA control can force Texas into dependence in at least two ways. First, though excessive regulation of a major industry, economic growth will be stifled. This will create more state dependence on federal funds. Second, unnecessary EPA regulations will cost Texans jobs. This is will create individual dependence on welfare programs and since these programs include state-mandated funding, Texas will be hit with additional liabilities.

Product is Energy Star Certified, But Not Available To The Public

The gas-powered Black-Gold model clock radio is sleek, durable, easy on your electric bill and surprisingly quiet.

Most of us want to be good stewards to the environment, and in these tough economic times we’d all like to save a buck or two in the process.  If that’s true for you, you’re probably interested in the government’s Energy Star program, a joint venture between the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DoE) that is intended to help “us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices“.  Energy Star is all about recognizing products that meet strict energy efficiency guidlines so that we can all make smarter choices, and reward companies that are making superior products.

So, as a service to consumers out there, I’d like to recommend the Black-Gold model alarm clock-radio manufactured by Spartan Digital Electronics, Inc.  According to their website, it is gas-powered, easy on your electric bill, and Energy Star certified.  It also approximates the size of a small portable generator for “increased ease while traveling”.

A gasoline-powered alarm clock?  Is this for real?

I saw this fellow, Lord Christopher Monckton, speak at the North Houston TEA Party on November 2nd, at Sam Houston Race Park.  Excellent speaker.

In this video clip, Lord Christopher Monckton, former science adviser to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, points out that Barack Husein Obama (I’m not sullying the Office of the President by ceding that to him) is ready to sign a United Nations Climate Change Treaty, thereby  allowing the United Nations fully run all climate policies in the United States, as well as most other industrialized nations in the world.

The Minnesota Free Market Institute hosted an event at Bethel University in St. Paul on Wednesday evening, October 14th. Keynote speaker Lord Monckton gave a scathing and lengthy presentation, complete with detailed charts, graphs, facts, and figures which culminated in the utter decimation of both the pop culture concept of global warming and the credible threat of any significant anthropomorphic climate change.

Sail on, Oh Ship of State!
Sail on, Oh Union strong and great.
Humanity with all its fears
With all the hope of future years
Is hanging breathless on thy fate.”

As ever yours,

Franklin D. Roosevelt (to Winston Churchill on January 20, 1941)

[Article from Investors Business Daily, links added by HALC.us staff]

Control: The House and Senate climate bills contain a provision giving the president extraordinary powers in the event of a “climate emergency.” As chief of staff Rahm Emanuel says, a crisis is a terrible thing to waste.

If you thought the House health care bill that nobody read has hidden passages that threaten our freedoms and liberty, take a peak at the “trigger” placed in the byzantine innards of both the House-passed Waxman-Markey bill and the Kerry-Boxer bill just passed by Democrats out of Sen. Barbara Boxer‘s Environment and Public Works  Committee.

As Nick Loris of The Heritage Foundation points out, the Kerry-Boxer bill requires the declaration of a “climate emergency” if the concentration of carbon dioxide and other declared greenhouse gases in the atmosphere exceeds 450 parts per million (ppm). It was at about 286 ppm before the Industrial Revolution and now sits at around 368 ppm.

That figure was picked out of a hat because the warm-mongers believe that’s the level at which the polar ice caps will disappear, boats can be moored on the Statue of Liberty’s torch and dead polar bears will wash up on the beaches of Malibu.

The Senate version includes a section that gives the president authority, under this declared “climate emergency,” to “direct all Federal agencies to use existing statutory authority to take appropriate actions … to address shortfalls” in achieving greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions.

Democratic Congressman Gene Green, representing Texas’s 29th Congressional District, will be holding five town hall meetings over the next two months (he has already had three, as of 8/5/09).  These town hall meetings are a great opportunity for liberty loving and constitutionally minded citizens such as ourselves to discuss our concerns with an influential member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which recently produced two pieces of legislation that have caught the public’s attention:

1.  HR 2454 “American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009″, aka “Cap and Trade” or more appropriately “Cap and Tax”; and
2.  HR 3200 “America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009″, aka “Health Insurance Reform” or more appropriately “ObamaCare.”

Rep Gene Green is holding town hall meetings in August & September as follows:

-  August 5, George Sanchez School @ 6:30 PM (mapRSVP w/ HALC)
- August 18, Manchester @ 7:00 PM (map, RSVP w/ HALC)
- August 19, Baytown @ 6:30 PM (map, RSVP w/ HALC)
- August 20, Meadowcreek Village @ 7:00 PM (map, RSVP / HALC)
- September 1, Pasadena @ 6:30 PM (map, RSVP w/ HALC)

Please consider attending one or more of these town hall meetings and take advantage of this timely opportunity to educate Representative Green about the detrimental effects these pieces of legislation will have on Houston and the entire country, and to remind him of his obligation to support and defend the Constitution.  If you’re a voting resident of the 29th Congressional District, please remember to say so if you have an opportunity to speak -  this will impress upon Rep. Gene Green that his constituents are upset by his recent voting record.

If you’re able to attend, don’t forget to ask Rep. Gene Green about his position on HR 1207  ”Audit the Fed”!

capflightIn my last column, I joked that with public spending out of control and the piling on of the international bailout bill, economic collapse seems to be the goal of Congress. It is getting harder to joke about such a thing however, as the non-partisan General Accounting Office (GAO) has estimated that the administration’s health care plan would actually cost over a trillion dollars. This reality check may have given us a temporary reprieve on this particular disastrous policy, however an equally disastrous energy policy reared its ugly head on Capitol Hill last week.

The Cap and Trade Bill HR 2454 was voted on last Friday. Proponents claim this bill will help the environment, but what it really does is put another nail in the economy’s coffin. The idea is to establish a national level of carbon dioxide emissions, and sell pollution permits to industry as the Catholic Church used to sell indulgences to sinners. HR 2454 also gives federal bureaucrats new power to regulate a wide variety of household appliances, such as light bulbs and refrigerators, and further distorts the market by providing more of your tax money to auto companies.

The administration has pointed to Spain as a shining example of this type of progressive energy policy. Spain has been massively diverting capital from the private sector into politically favored environmental projects for the better part of a decade, and many in Washington apparently like what they see. However, under no circumstances should anyone serious about economic recovery emulate an economy that is now approaching 20 percent unemployment, where every green job created, eliminated 2.2 real jobs and cost around $800,000 each!

The real inconvenient truth is that the cost of government regulations, taxes, fees, red tape and bureaucracy is a considerable expense that has to be considered when companies decide where to do business and how many people they can afford to hire. Increasing governmental burden directly causes capital flight and job losses, as Spain has learned. In this global economy its easy enough for businesses to relocate to countries that are more politically friendly to economic growth. If our government continues to kick the economy while its down, it will be a long time before it gets back up. In fact, jobs are much more likely to go overseas, compounding our problems.

And for what? Contrary to claims repeated over and over, there is no consensus in the scientific community that global warming is getting worse or that it is manmade. In fact over 30,000 scientists signed a petition recently directly disputing the claims on which this policy is based. Legitimate environmental claims should instead be directed towards the public sector. The government, especially the military, is the most serious polluter in the country, and is exempt from most EPA regulations. Meanwhile Washington bureaucrats have classified the very air we exhale as a pollutant and have gone unchallenged in this incredible assertion. The logical consequence is that there will come a time when we will have to buy a government permit just to emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere from our own lungs!

The events on Capitol Hill last week just demonstrate Washington’s audacity in manufacturing problems just so they can expand government power to solve them.

HR 2454 passed by two votes and now moves to the senate. According to Conservatives for Change, eight republicans voted for the bill and 44 Democrats voted against. Never thoughts I’d say this, but thank you Democrats.

Mary Mack Bono – Ca. 45th
Michael Castle – De. At Large
Mark Kirk – IL 6th
Leonard Lance – NJ 7th
Frank LoBiondo – NJ 2nd
John McHugh – NY 23rd
Davie Reichert – WA 8th
Chris Smith NJ 4th

According to the Heritage Foundation, if this bill becomes law, household electricity bills will rise 90%, natural gas bills will rise 55% and gasoline costs will rise 58%.  The total contribution per family per year will be over $3,000. What’s worse about this legislation is that even Obama knows this legislation will “cause electricity rates to necessarily skyrocket”

Glenn Beck had one of my favorite guests, Peter Schiff, on air talking about Cap and Trade.

Within hours (estimated 5pm EST), today’s legislative session is expected to vote on the 1,201 page HR 2454 “Cap-and-Trade” (Cap-and-Tax).

Please call your congressman immediately to oppose this bill. Our friends at the Campaign for Liberty have created a handy online tool to find your congressman’s number. Use this link to access it.

From the Campaign for Liberty: “Passing Cap-and-Trade is a very high priority for the Obama administration, but a procedural vote earlier this morning only produced a 217-205 favorable result.  This very tight margin proves your calls and emails are having an impact.”
