One way to measure the surprising rightward political lurch of the past two years and rise of the Tea Party is to chart the relative position of Ron Paul, who has never flinched from his beliefs. He’s not alone anymore.

RON PAUL LED the annual Fourth of July parade through Friendswood, Texas, from the back of a gleaming pickup truck that inched along behind a replica of the Liberty Bell and just ahead of Lady Liberty herself, who was sitting in a Corvette and seemed to have wilted under the oppressive noonday sun. Or perhaps the oppressive policies of Barack Obama—it was hard to tell which. Along the parade route, the Stars and Stripes vied for prominence with STOP OBAMA signs.

Friendswood lies just south of Houston, in a district that voted 2-to-1 for John McCain, and for George W. Bush before him. But the distinctive flavor of the local conservatism is most vividly conveyed by Paul, the 75-year-old arch-libertarian congressman and sometime presidential candidate whose disdain for federal power is so severe that he once voted to deny Mother Teresa the Congressional Gold Medal because the Constitution does not expressly authorize such an expenditure. Paul thinks the government ought to be doing a whole lot less, and his constituents seem to agree. They’ve been returning him to Congress since the 1970s by growing margins.

Lately a lot of people, not just in Texas, are coming around to this view. “I’m so confident in my philosophy that I think I could run a pretty good race in San Francisco,” he told me in his Washington office recently. “What I’d talk about there wouldn’t be so much about deficit spending as about personal liberties, military engagement overseas, and the financial crisis. That used to help more in conservative districts. But everybody’s worried about it now.” Read the rest of this entry »

HOW TO FIGHT CONSPIRACIES AND WIN

When someone at last discovers that some conspiracy has taken over this or that institution, he gets into a mentality that sees conspiracies everywhere. Anyone who finally accepts the fact that one or more conspiracies have been operating for one or more centuries to control the affairs of his nation, or even the whole world, has a tendency to see everything in terms of conspiracies. He begins to attribute to this or that conspiracy the ability to forecast the future almost perfectly, to control the future almost perfectly, and to thwart all attempts of critics to deflect the conspiracy from its agenda.

Over 40 years ago, the man who would later be my father-in-law, R. J. Rushdoony, warned me about this attitude. He called these people “gravediggers.” This was before Phyllis Schlafly used the phrase. He called them gravediggers because he equated them with people who are required by their executioners to dig their own graves before the executioners execute them. This saves work for the executioners. Rushdoony’s point was that conservatives tend to dig their own graves, with the result that their enemies have much less trouble disposing of them. I have found over the years that his assessment was accurate. Read the rest of this entry »

Can you find Kyrgyzstan on a map? Hint - it's in green, just northeast of Afghanistan.

I know many of you are psyched about the big Tea Party Rallies today, and I hope you have a great time and really show everyone the spirit of taking back your country.  I also hope you don’t run into any phony Tea Pary activists.  Hey, maybe you could carry a fold-up sign that says, “Phony Tea Party Activist” with a big arrow pointing to one side.  Than way, when some faker holds up a big sign for the camera with all sorts of swastikas and hate speech all over it to prank all the Tea Partiers, you could sneak up behind him and hold up your sign for the camera, pranking him.  It’d serve him right.

But if she gets there first, she gets to use her whip on him all the way back to the starting line.

But hey, all this organizing for freedom and liberty is hard work.  If it gets you down, you need a break.  You need to go to some nice, pleasant place to relax, unwind, and just get away from it all.

I recommend beautiful, sunny Kyrgyzstan.

Uh-oh… It’s a bird, it’s a plane… It’s a black male preacher addressing a crowd of .. ahem, 600 or 700 Southern, white people who can’t read, write or speak very well. (Or, that’s what the corporate-controlled mass media would have you believe!!)

Ok, so we’re still high from an awesome tea party and are eager to see how the media will look upon it. The Houston Chronicle (which about 2,000 left over protesters decided to march on) reported the Houston Tea Party, in this author’s opinion, very fairly.

Here’s an excerpt

Protesters turned out by the thousands Wednesday in Houston and other cities across the nation to voice their displeasure with big government spending and what they called the erosion of people’s constitutional rights.

Among those taking part in the Tax Day Tea Parties was Tim Volzer, who took an hour away from work to attend a rally of 450 people in Pearland pushing for less government spending. The roofing company salesman wore a sign on his back that summed his feelings: “No taxation without representation, Bro.”

If you haven’t seen it, you must. HALC member and videographer extraordinaire Bryan Thome has put together this excellent video summarizing the Houston Tea Party.

A note from Bryan:
Thanks to the many volunteer organizers that made this event possible. Felicia Cravens is the lead Houston Tea Party organizer.

To get a sense of how big the crowds were at the Houston Tea Party yesterday you have to look at this photo.

Crowds at Houston Tea Party

The crowds were so huge they had to shut the entrances to the event. People continued to wait outside and I even saw a few young folks jumping the fence to evade police to enter the event! check out the gallery and videos below.

Today, groups across the country are organizing Tax Tea Parties. Objecting to the gargantuan amounts of money spent by the government to bail out failing businesses and banks. For many of us who have been involved in this movement, we’re delighted to see so many people finally waking up but the obvious question really is…

…what now?

Skeptics of these tea parties are saying that the attendees are just blowing off steam and will quietly retreat into silence once “they get it out of their system.” That these events are simply random acts of liberty.

One of the most damaging events in any movement are random acts. When the world doesn’t change, and  random acts can lead to burnout and failure. As a movement, we must know how to replicate success, but more importantly, how to grow stronger. What is the event after the event?

We at the Houston Area Liberty Campaign feel we have the answer.

HALC has developed a local plan that intends to make it easy to participate, join forces and get results. We encourage you to explore our site, learn our mission and join our fight. The only way to affect real change, is to join forces and work toward a common goal.

Don’t let this tea party become a random act of liberty.
